The advantages are also pointed out by Guilherme Pereira, one of the founders of Portugal Bugs, a company from Matosinhos that breeds black beetle larvae (flour bug or mealworm) for human and animal food.
“There are insects that manage to have the maximum amount of essential amino acids that we need and cannot synthesize. Humans need protein to survive. Some go to meat and others to vegetables, but these protein sources are unsustainable if we think about the water resources we spend, the space we need, the greenhouse gases that are released,” he said.
